What is ADHD?
Chances are you know someone diagnosed with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), or you are familiar with the term. It is a condition commonly diagnosed in children as well as adults that mainly causes problems in the patients’ ability to focus and their behavior.
Parents and, frequently school teachers, notice that some children seem to be hyperactive (constantly running around or unable to sit still) or show disruptive behavior. Sometimes these children have a hard time focusing on their homework, and their attention span is extremely short, making it difficult to communicate or “connect” with them. Often, these problems change and persist in their adult life.
What Are The Symptoms of ADHD?
ADHD can look different in children than in adults, and it also depends on each person. In some people it can be more severe than in others, and can cause trouble concentrating in class or work, difficulty keeping healthy relationships, a child whose parents and/or teachers notice hyperactive/disruptive behavior, or whose performance in school is consistently low despite having the potential to excel. Adults with ADHD may find themselves changing jobs frequently and/or not advancing professionally, or feeling overwhelmed by day-to-day responsibilities.
How is ADHD Diagnosed?
Although the diagnosis of ADHD requires a thorough evaluation by a qualified healthcare professional, a person with ADHD could present with, but not limited to, any or all of the following:
- Inability to concentrate on tasks, or be easily distracted
- Disorganization in their personal life or at work/school
- Tendency to procrastinate
- Suffering from depression and/or anxiety
- Alcohol and/or other substance use, as a way to self-medicate
